yes of course, you gain also in the fact that users are added at same time on both cms in this way, without using tricks:
if you let users register on phpBB side also, they aren't added in WP until as logged in phpBB, they not visits Wordpress, or until they not login into WP almost one time, OR using tricks explained on help topics about, redirecting users to WP to get the same result when they terminate registration process, or on first login in phpBB. Because remember, this is a Wordpress plugin so it run only in Wordpress.
