I just tested the flow you say this way:
changed an user to editor, then logged with the same user. Logged and the group not switched to Subscriber.
Then i have set the user as subscriber again, and activated the option
[b]Switch the WP user to specified Group in phpBB, when Role updated in WordPress or vice versa[/b]
setting it to
[b]Only update user's Group in phpBB when Role updated in WordPress (admin - user profile update)[/b]
(just because i test out sometime something random so to check that all is ok)
and the user has been correctly set as moderator in phpBB when i switched him to Editor in WP.
Then i have try to login with this user and he is correctly an Editor in WP and the role not switched to Subscriber.

Said that, can you maybe add some info more like [i]which plugins options activated you are on[/i] or if you use a custom file for the Groups/Roles switches?

I can confirm, after updating to v2.9.1 everything works as it should.

Also another bug has been fixed on same function, related to an eventual password to be updated.

Look i am under a big flu, maybe going little better just today after 20 days (if god want).

Ok detected the problem, It happen exactly on login, going to fix it immediately
and the plugin will be updated.
